Introduction
Welcome to CORE’s website which brings you the latest developments at Sellafield, its nuclear fuel reprocessing operations and associated issues which include radioactive discharges to the environment, health detriment, plutonium and waste production and management and the nuclear materials transports that support the system.
Since the technical bankruptcy of British Nuclear Fuels plc and the transfer of Sellafield’s ownership to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority in 2005, national interest in the West Cumbrian complex has largely diverted to the new owner’s clean-up and decommissioning programme for the site – and to the industry’s contentious plans for new-reactor build at Moorside adjacent to Sellafield and the underground dumping of nuclear waste. Whilst these are routinely and closely monitored, highlighted and opposed by CORE, our campaign remains focused on Sellafield’s reprocessing operations and their detriments which, almost under the radar of public attention, are scheduled to continue to 2020 or beyond.
